Monday Morning Roundup 12.10.12

Happy Snowy Monday!

There's a myth that Minnesotans are used to this kind of thing; that we can be outside playing for hours at a time without feeling the cold, and that we don't bat an eye about driving in bad weather.  We're supposed to be tough, and slightly crazy, like our Viking ancestors, strapping on our Nordic skis, or perhaps hooking up a team of sleddogs, to get us to and fro if the snow plows can't make it through.  But I can safely say that I did not inherit this adventurous spirit, and while the snow piled up this weekend, I watched out my window in horror.

Here are some links:

If anyone is gift wrap-challenged, like I am, you might want to take a look at 4 Secrets to Wrapping a Present. I admit, I looked at this and thought it looked too complicated, so I'll continue with my method of crumpling tissue paper around gifts and shoving them into bags that may or may not be seasonally-appropriate.

A must-try recipe from Smitten Kitchen: Cauliflower-Feta Fritters with Pomegranate.

Are you getting stressed?  I am.  Here's 10 Ways To Keep the Holiday Blues Away.  Anything helps, right?

I'm ashamed to say I had heard about this a while ago, but hadn't checked it out until yesterday.  Dollshouse Downton is what you get when you combine two of my favorite things, but now I'm even more delighted to find out that the girls who put it together are only 16 years old.

And finally, another funny list from McSweeney's: Inverted Reality Show Cliches.

Have a great, safe, Monday morning!

Monday Morning Roundup 12.3.12 (The Holiday Freebie Edition)

Happy Monday, all of you!

After all my big plans of creating some kind of artsy, wonderful advent calendar, I ended up throwing this one together in front of the kids on Friday.  Turns out, although it's sloppy, they were wowed by the opening flaps and think they have the most clever mommy.  Some of the spaces are just blank, while others show special events, like driving up to Grandma's house for Christmas.

I have an Oprah's Favorite Things theme to my links today.  Every link is for something you can get for FREE!

One blog I like to follow is Dinner, A Love Story.  Though December, they are giving away PDF copies of their new book about their favorite children's books.

I shared this on Facebook this week after my friend Andy posted it, but it's too good to not share again.  You can download Sufjan Stevens' entire new Christmas album Silver and Gold, for free, right here.  And you can poke around the site to find some other free music downloads as well.

OK, this one was around last year, too, but I think this personalized video from Santa is freakishly believable.  I set one up with all Boo's personal information and played it for The Mister and we were so excited for him to see it.

This is kind of lame, but I was recently in a thrift store looking through VHS tapes because we still have a VCR that we use for watching cheap kids' movies.  I found a copy of Frosty the Snowman for $.69, thought it was a great deal, and brought it home, only to find out the tape was broken and wouldn't play.  It occurred to me later to check YouTube, and of course, there it was.  The moral of this story: always check to see if you can watch something online first, especially if it's a movie you'd only watch once a year.

Speaking of Christmas movies, Redbox has Love Actually this month.  Although it's totally worth the $1.29 to rent it for an evening, you could always try finding free rental codes.

Now for the big Oprah moment.  "Everay-boday gets some free monaaaaaaay!!!"  Have you heard about this?  If you purchased an LCD flat screen TV, monitor, or laptop between 1999 and 2006 you could be eligible for a piece of this class action lawsuit.  You only have until December 6 to file your claim, and it only takes about a minute.  I bought 3 laptops in that time frame and I don't know if that means I'll get something for each one, but it looks like $25 is the minimum payout.  I could use an extra $25!

That's all my links for the week.  Thanks for reading!
